Thinning skin can result in its appearance becoming transparent and dehydrated and ultimately contributing to wrinkles and the aged appearance. It can be caused by many different factors including sun exposure, genetics and medicine, however the biggest factor, is hormones.
As we age and head towards the menopause, our oestrogen levels deplete which reduces the amount of hydration, collagen, elastin and blood flow within the skin as well as our ability for the skin to defend itself against the ageing affects of the sun. In fact, within the first five years post menopause, we loose 30% of the collagen within our skin and continue to loose it at a rate of 2% per year.

There are several things you can do at home to help plump up your skin. Using a very good Hyaluronic acid will help hydrate your skin, whilst studies have demonstrated that using retinol can double the thickness of the epidermal layer of skin.
Furthermore, Oestrogen replacement (either tablets of topical cream) can also help to reverse the effects of thinning skin caused by menopause and studies have suggested that within a year of usage, the effects can be reversed by up to 30%.

Finally, investing in a good retinol is crucial to improving the quality of your skin and has been proved to thicken up the epidermal later of the skin by 100% over the course or 12 weeks!
