Skin boosting treatments such as Profhilo® are especially designed for those who are experiencing the typical signs of ageing such as dry and dull skin that is loosing its elasticity resulting in the appearance of wrinkles. They work by remodelling the skin through the boosting of collagen production, aiding the firming up of the skin whilst attracting moisture into the area making them a perfect skin hydrating booster too.

Skin boosting treatments can generally be carried out through two methods, either by physically injecting the booster into the skin, or by taking advantage of the skin stimulating properties of microneedling and using it as a glide which penetrate through the micro holes made in the skin; the method chosen will depend on both the skin booster being used, and the problem area being treated.

CASE STUDY 1

M is a mother of three older children. She came to us to discuss her neck as the crepeiness had really been bothering her for some time as it made her feel a lot older than she was, and stopped her from wearing some of the tops she wanted to wear.

Having discussed with her the different options available, we opted to use TKN as the skin booster and to microneedle the product into her skin with the whole process taking less than 15 minutes.

Less than a week later, we had a message from M informing us that she was over the moon as she could already see a difference and at two weeks, when we reviewed the before and after photos, even we were impressed at the difference it made so quickly, and after just one session too!

S is a mother of grown up children. She came to us because she was concerned about the creases in her lower face and felt it really knocked her confidence.

We discussed various options and didn’t feel that dermal fillers would be beneficial as the skin creases were likely to be caused by the thinning of the skin.

We carried out skin boosting treatment using TKN and microneedling and S was over the moon when we reviewed her two weeks later and she was able to see how much of a difference a single session made.

What is the best skin booster on the market?

Whilst Profhilo® received the best injectable of the year award 2022, the best skin booster on the market will really depend on what it is you are trying to achieve as the booster and technique (needle or microneedling) will change the outcome of the treatment.

Are all skin boosters the same?

Yes and no! Skin boosters will primarily all have the same main ingredient i.e Hyaluronic Acid, but the molecular weight (how many mg per ml) will differ with each product, along with the other components that are present in the product.

Do skin boosters hurt?

However you receive a skin booster it will involve needles. Profhilo® tends to be a little more stinggy than most and we are happy to numb prior to your treatment. Microneedling involved use a special cartridge that contains many needles and feels a little scratchy but again, we are happy to numb you prior to your to your treatment.

How often can I have a skin booster treatment?

With Profhilo® it is suggested that you have two treatments a month apart and then top up every six months. With other skin boosters and especially if they are microneedled, there is no harm in having this treatment once a month, or until you are happy with the results.

How is a skin boosting treatment carried out?

There are two main ways Skin Boosting treatments can be carried out, either via a mesotherapy needle technique, or through the use of a microneedling pen. Carrying out skin boosters using a mesotherapy technique means using a needle, very superficially to the surface of the skin, depositing the skin booster at the right layer of the skin to maximise the hydration and skin forming properties of the booster. Microneedling on the other hand, creates tiny micro holes in the skin, but can encourage an even distribution of the skin booster which is especially helpful in areas where there is a lot of creepiness or laxity in the skin.

When will I see a difference?

In some cases you can start to see a difference in just a few days, for other types of skin boosters, it can take more than one treatment for you to notice the difference that the skin booster has made to your skin.

Can skin boosters make me look younger?

Skin boosters can definitely help make you look younger! One of the biggest signs of ageing is thinning skin which has lost its elasticity which in turn, can form wrinkles. Skin boosters can rehydrate the skin and firm it up by encouraging collagen producing which helps turn the time back on the skin.

Can skin boosters help get rid of wrinkles?

Skin booster can help get rid of wrinkles as it helps to plump the skin up where the skin has become thinner (causing the wrinkled effect). It can also aid the production of collagen which can help slow down the wrinkles coming back.

Do I need more than one treatment?

It is generally advised to have two treatments, one month apart for Profhilo® with a view of maintaining every six months and three treatments, one month apart for skin boosters where microneedling is the method of application.

How long does the treatment last?

The treatment will generally last a few months, but this will depend on how you look after your skin at home. If you would prefer treatment options that last longer, it would be worth getting in touch to see what options there are available to you.

How long does the treatment take to do?

Whether the skin boosting treatment is carried out via microneedling or needle, it will take approximately 30 minutes to discuss the treatment along with the risks, benefits and any alternatives to you and approximately 15 minutes to carry out the treatment itself.

What is the downtime like?

If you have a skin boosting treatment with microneedling you may find that you are a little red for 1-2 days after treatment, if you have skin boosters using a needle however, the downtime is only a few hours (if that).

What can go wrong with skin boosters?

Not much can go wrong when it comes to skin boosters as either technique should be carried out superficially to the point where it misses any important structures in the face which could potentially cause problems. Bruising will always be a potential risk, although this is more the case if a needle is used.

What are the alternative to skin boosters?

Alternatives to skin boosters will depend on what it is you are treating. In some cases, updating your skin care regime that you have a home may be enough, but on the other hand, skin boosters may not be enough to boost skin laxity enough to make a difference and this is where Dermal Fillers or Antiwrinkle injections may need to be considered. The best thing to do if you are not sure, is to book in for a consultation and we can discuss with you what the options are.

Can skin boosters be used with dermal fillers?

Yes, but depending on the area and technique being used, it may not be possible to do this at the same time. For example, we would not carry out cheek filler and Profhilo® at the same appointment because we don’t want to draw too much moisture to the area we have used Dermal Fillers in. However, if we were doing cheek fillers and skin boosting the neck area, this would not be a problem.

How effective are skin boosting treatments?

Skin boosting treatments can be very effective when they are carried out on the right patient, for the right amount of treatments and using the right technique for the problem area. Like most good things, nothing lasts for ever and it is important to recognise that skin boosting treatments are great for a one off boost before a big event, but ideally should be used as part of a long term treatment plan to maintain its benefits.
