Skin Lesions

Skin lesions and especially skin tags can be unsightly and really affect your confidence, but you don't have to live with them.

WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW ARE THEY CAUSED?

Skin lesions come in many different shapes and sizes, and they can be caused by a variety of factors. Some of the most common types of skin lesions include cherry angiomas, skin tags, seborrheic keratosis, and moles and although these skin lesions are typically harmless, it's important to understand what causes them and how to identify them.

Cherry angiomas are small, red bumps that typically appear on the skin after the age of 30 and are caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels in the skin and can be genetic.

Skin tags, on the other hand, are small, flesh-coloured growths that typically appear on the neck, armpits, and groin and are usually caused by the rubbing of things like skin and necklaces and most often found in those that are overweight or diabetic.

Seborrheic keratosis is another common skin lesion that appears as a waxy, scaly, or raised growth (often looking like brown, fat cornflakes) and are more common in older people with occupation that kept them outside, but can also be related to genetics too.

Finally, moles are another common type of skin lesion, and are caused by a cluster of pigmented cells which can be flat or raised and vary in colour. While most moles are harmless, it's important to monitor them for changes in size, shape, or colour as this could be a sign of skin cancer and therefore would strongly advise having them checked by a Doctor prior to removal.

Whilst these skin lesions are harmless, they can have a big effect on self-confidence and can be removed if desired

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO AT HOME TO HELP?

One way you can try and get rid of skin tags at home is by tying a thin piece of string such as dental floss around the base of the skin tag and waiting for it to die which works as it removes the skin tags blood supply. However, it is really important to know with certainty that the lesion is a skin tag and not something more sinister that needs investigating.

Unfortunately for the other skin lesions mentioned, there are no other reliable methods of removing at home.

Treatments

Whilst there are some things you can do at home, professional treatments are a good way to really boost the progress of your skin.
Skin Lesions

Cryotherapy

Works by damaging the cells of the lesion using air that is pushed through a small hole at high pressure to create a very cold environment that is impossible for cells to survive. Due to the size of the hole, the treatment can be very accurate, killing off the cells, whilst protecting the surrounding skin.
