A gummy smile, also know as excessive gingival display is a condition where a significant amount of gum tissue is on display when a person smiles as the upper lip elevates too far above the teeth.
There are many causes for a gummy smile including, an overgrowth gum, genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, medications or improper tooth eruption. In some cases, it can also be caused by a hyperactive upper lip muscle which causes the lip to rise higher than usual and may also be due to the way the teeth are sat in the jaw.
Whilst the gummy smile is common and in the vast majority of cases, not something that needs any medical intervention, it can make some feel very self conscious and in many cases, either stops them from smiling, or makes them cover their smile with their hand to hide their gums.
