Showing Too Much Gum When You Smile

Seeing too much gum when you smile but really affect your confidence, but it really doesn't have to!

WHAT IS IT AND HOW IS IT CAUSED?

A gummy smile, also know as excessive gingival display is a condition where a significant amount of gum tissue is on display when a person smiles as the upper lip elevates too far above the teeth.

There are many causes for a gummy smile including, an overgrowth gum, genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, medications or improper tooth eruption. In some cases, it can also be caused by a hyperactive upper lip muscle which causes the lip to rise higher than usual and may also be due to the way the teeth are sat in the jaw.

Whilst the gummy smile is common and in the vast majority of cases, not something that needs any medical intervention, it can make some feel very self conscious and in many cases, either stops them from smiling, or makes them cover their smile with their hand to hide their gums.

Unfortunately, apart from hiding your mouth when you smile, or not smiling at all, there is very little you can do at home to reduce the appearance of a gummy smile.

Treatments

Whilst there are some things you can do at home, professional treatments are a good way to really boost the progress of your skin.
Derma Fillers - SERO Aesthetics

Dermal Filler

In some cases, if the gummy smile if relatively minor, lip filler may be enough to lessen the appearance.

Botulinum Toxin Treatments

Botulinum Toxin

If the gummy smile is caused by a hyperactive muscle, this treatment works well by reducing (but not eliminating) the amount of movement it has, dropping the lip down just enough to keep the movement, whilst hiding the gums!
