Microneeding, also known as medical needling and collagen induction therapy, uses many small and very fine needles to cause micro traumas to the skin, causing the body to use its own repairing processes to produce its own version of collagen injections. Initially after treatment, collagen type 3 is laid down in the first aspect of the repair process which is then replaced over a period of months by the more permanent type 1 collagen. This causes the skin to plump out, reducing the appearance of fine lines, whilst the process also aids the breaking up of both scar tissue and pigmentation.
You may have heard of either the Skinpen or Dermapen, but all microneedling pens work in the same way by holding cartridges containing the tiny needles which oscillate to penetrate the skin over and over again. This was previously carried out by a dermaroller, however, the pens are more comfortable, as well as being more effective due to the fact that the depth and quantity of needles can be adjusted to meet the requirements of the specific issue.
Whilst microneedling is one of the best treatments for fine lines, scarring and pigmentation, due to the fact it works on a deeper layer of skin, it is important to bare in mind that it can take a few months of treatments to notice a difference as the skin needs to go through its natural shedding process to reveal the new, repaired skin underneath.
