Probably it’s most famous fan, Katy Perry swears by these for giving her a fresh and glowing appearance. But then so does, Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox, as well as both Chloe Lewis and James Lock from Towie.

Yep, tear trough fillers are big news these days. But what are they and what do they achieve?

In Perry’s case she used the hydraulic acid filler injections to remove dark circles under the eyes. These were caused by the loss of fat in the tear trough area – space underneath the lower eyelids and above the cheeks - as she aged. This in turn can cause hollows under the eyes, which can have the appearance of dark circles. Perry says she recommends tear trough fillers to “everyone who wants a solution for their dark circles.”

Darylle Sargeant, a contestant on Love Island 2018 is also a fan. She insists getting tear trough fillers made her look five years younger. James Lock was delighted to note that it made him appear less tired looking. 

When she went to have her tear trough fillers Geordie Shore’s Sophie Kasaei said she was told to regard it as “internal concealer that’s been placed underneath the skin.”

Towie’s Gemma Collins posted the results of her tear trough filler treatment on Instagram – and frightened her followers. That’s because she fell victim to a form of under-eye bruising known in the industry as the Tyndall Effect. This is when the skin turns a bluish hue and is caused by the filler injection being too superficial and not deep enough. In Gemma’s case the practitioner used a microcannula rather than a needle. 

Collins reported that the bruising didn’t last long and beamed that she will now ‘never look tired.’

Tear trough fillers and bruising

The main way to avoid getting bruising after dermal filler injections in the tear trough area is to go to a recognised and qualified aesthetic practitioner. They will have the knowledge and experience to know how far into the skin the filler should be injected.

You will probably pay more at a medical aesthetics clinic but that’s because you’re paying for the expertise that comes with working in a professional environment. Too much of the industry is deregulated, meaning anyone can inject the fillers, regardless of whether they have been trained or not. 

Going to a recognised clinic to have tear trough fillers will also be less painful. Although many of the fillers contain pain relief, a professional practitioner will also anesthetise the area, ensuring it feels numb during treatment.
