The NMC's decision to ban remote prescribing for botox: What it means for you

June 10, 2025 Posted by: Niki Sulaiman

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has recently announced a significant change in its prescribing guidelines, banning remote prescribing for Botox and other prescription-only medications used in aesthetic treatments. This change aims to enhance patient safety and ensure that proper assessments are carried out before any injectable treatment is administered.

What Does This Mean for You as a Patient?

If you’re considering Botox treatment, you will now be required to see a qualified prescriber face-to-face before receiving treatment. This change is designed to ensure that a thorough medical assessment is conducted to assess your suitability for treatment and identify any potential contraindications.

Practically, this means that you will need a minimum of two appointments (but ideally three):

  1. Prescribing Appointment: During this appointment, the prescriber will assess your suitability for Botox treatment. They will review your medical history, discuss your treatment goals, and decide on the appropriate dosage and injection sites.
  2. Treatment Appointment: After the prescription has been issued, you will need to return for the treatment itself. This can often be scheduled on the same day as the prescribing appointment, but in many cases, it may require a separate visit.
  3. Follow-Up Appointment: To monitor your results and address any concerns, a follow-up appointment is highly recommended. This is also an opportunity for a top-up if necessary.

How the Ban Affects Non-Medical Practitioners

A further implication of the NMC’s new guidance is its impact on non-medical practitioners who previously relied on prescribers to remotely authorise Botox prescriptions. Many insurance providers are now refusing to cover prescribers who issue prescriptions for non-medical professionals, citing increased risks and lack of oversight.

In addition, industry associations specialising in aesthetic medicine are now implementing stricter policies, stating that their members are no longer allowed to prescribe for non-medically registered professionals. This move further reinforces the importance of patient safety and accountability in aesthetic treatments.

Potential Risks of Illegitimate Botox Sourcing

With these regulatory changes, there is a growing concern that some non-medical professionals may attempt to source Botox products through illegitimate channels. This poses significant risks to patient safety, as unregulated products can be counterfeit, contaminated, or incorrectly dosed, leading to potentially serious complications.

To safeguard yourself as a patient, it is crucial to ensure that your Botox provider is medically qualified, insured, and follows the latest NMC guidelines. Ask to see the prescriber’s registration details, verify the source of the Botox product, and always attend a face-to-face prescribing appointment to ensure your safety and well-being.

If you have any questions about the new guidelines or how they may affect your treatment plan, feel free to get in touch with us. We’re committed to maintaining the highest standards of patient care and ensuring that every treatment is administered safely and ethically.
