Should You Opt for Botox or Fillers?

December 3, 2024 Posted by: Niki Sulaiman

Unless you are a regular client with us here at Sero Aesthetics, we would always advise you to book an initial consultation before ordering a specific treatment. This way we get to know you as well as what you’d like to achieve from your aesthetics treatment and whether or not what you’ve chosen is right for you.

It also gives you the opportunity to ask us questions. After all there’s a lot of misinformation out there on the web, so it’s important to get the facts first-hand from a qualified practitioner.

Where using both botox and filler is best

It may be, for instance, that you think botox is best for getting rid of those annoying frown lines between your eyebrows (also known as Glabella lines). And yes, botox will work, but personally I prefer to use both botox and filler. I achieve this first using botox to ‘freeze’ the muscle (technically stopping the brain sending signals for the muscle to move) and then using filler. I’ll also use a cannula to minimise any potential risk. My thinking behind this is that by using botox first I prevent the filler being moved, ensuring the treatment lasts longer and it’s more cost-effective for you.

I’ll also use both botox and filler for smoothing out Marionette lines. That’s because sometimes the Depressor Anguli Oris - or muscle around the mouth - is so downturned that filler is needed as well in order to really make a difference.

What Botox is best for

Botulinum Toxin is most commonly used for getting rid of wrinkles and fine lines, especially on the forehead or around the eyes (known as crow’s feet). When injected into a particular area it prevents the muscle there from continuing to make the movements which lead to the frown lines, or those radiating from the side of the eyes.

Another use for Botox includes injecting small amounts around the lips to relax the muscles there, causing the upper lip to appear fuller. This is especially the case where there is asymmetry. The neck muscles (platysmal bands) can be relaxed by Botox to prevent ‘saggy skin’ on the neck. The nearby jaw can also be made to look slimmer by injecting the large masseter muscles there. Another area Botox works particularly well at is in getting rid of Bunny Lines or nasal wrinkles which appear as diagonal lines at the side of the nose.

How fillers work

Filler is a gel-like substance known as Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and is used for plumping up the skin rather than relaxing muscle. Unfortunately, it can lead to blindness if injected wrongly in certain areas, such as the forehead and which is why it should always be administered by professionals like ourselves.

Fillers are used, as the name suggests, to add volume to areas of the face which have ‘fallen in’ over time. By plumping up these areas, the face looks younger and more refreshed. Typically, fillers are most often used under the eyes, in the cheeks, on the jawline and chin.

They are also great for improving the appearance of Nasolabial folds. These are linesrunning from the nose to the mouth and are usually caused by the fat pads in the cheeks drooping downwards. For a more natural – and longer-lasting - look I’ll insert filler into both the cheeks and the lines themselves.

In a nutshell then, Botox works by ‘freezing’ specific muscles – the repetitive use of which has led to the wrinkles in the first place. Fillers are for ‘filling in’ the wrinkles to smooth out the skin and reduce the appearance of lines. Both treatments are what is described as ‘minimally invasive,’ in other words, they don’t require a general anaesthetic and are performed on an outpatient basis.
