Aqualyx® fat dissolving is a body contouring treatment and effective alternative to Liposuction. It works by injecting the Aqualyx® solution into the area which specifically targets fat cells, dissolving the outer membrane that hold the cell together, disbursing it into the bodies normal waste filtration system.

You can start to see the results of the fat dissolving injections within as little as a few days although some areas maybe more stubborn that others and may need more than one treatment. What happens on the day?

On the day of your treatment we will carry out a full consultation with you, explaining how the treatment works, advising how many sessions you might need and what to expect in the days that follow. We will also discuss any associated risks, and will discuss with you any options that might be available.

Once we have completed the consenting procedure, we will take pictures of the area to record your journey and will grid the area in 1.5cm squared blocks to ensure that we equally distribute the solution. We will then inject 0.15ml of the solution into each grid which will have been infused with Lidocaine (having had it prescribed to you prior to your visit) as this makes the treatment very tolerable.

Once the solution has been injected, we will wipe the gridding away and will massage arnica cream into the area to maximise the distribution of the solution.

We will then book you in for a review a month later to take more pictures and discuss your journey.

Does it hurt?

Fat dissolving injections can feel like bee stings if lidocaine is not infused with the solution and we therefore will not carry out this treatment if we have not had the medical form back from you for us to be able to have the lidocaine prescribed in preparation for your treatment.

You will find that as we are using needles, you will probably feel the needle more in some spots than others, but this can be controlled with the use of numbing cream prior to application.

How does fat dissolving work?

Fat dissolving injections, also known as intralipotherapy treatments work by dissolving the outer membrane of the fat cells which holds the cell together. By removing the outer membrane, the cell cannot survive and the contents are left within the body. Your bodies lymphatic and blood vessels then work together to filter this waste out of your body, taking it to your kidneys to be excreted through your urine. For this reason, it is vital to drink more than you usually would to enhance the filtration process.

Can I go to the gym after?

Whilst increasing your body temperature can increase the likelihood of bruising, we suggest that if you feel comfortable enough, to continue your routine as usual. We have had patients go to pole dancing and spinning classes the same day as their treatment!

What areas can aqualyx® fat dissolving treat?

We say that generally speaking, if you can grab it, you can stab it! In essence we can fat dissolve most areas of the body although some areas are more risky that others such as the knees and lower legs and we probably wouldn’t advise to treat these areas as there is a higher risk of necrosis.

How much fat dissolving solution do you add in each area?

This will depend on the area of the body being treated and our prices reflect the amount of Aqualyx® being used in each area. Generally, we would grid around the area being treated in 1.5cm squared blocks and will inject 0.15ml of the solution containing both Aqualyx® and lidocaine into the area.

On subsequent treatments however, we may inject more into the area if you have reacted well to the first treatment, and if the area has not responded quite as we’d have hoped.

How long will it take to see a difference?

This will depend on many things including the area treated, the amount of Aqualyx® being used and your own metabolism.

The abdomen and back area respond quicker to Aqualyx® and you can see a difference in just a few days. On the other hand, under the chin and the thighs are a little more stubborn and are likely to need more than one treatment to see a difference, however there have been a few patients which have seen the difference after just one.

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend on the area being treated and what your desired results are. Areas such as the abdomen and back tend to need less treatments over all (1-3 sessions) to achieve the desired results compared to other areas such as the thighs and chin which may need more (1-6).

Will the fat come back?

Once the fat cells have been removed from an area, the fat will not come back. However, if you were to increase the fat levels in that particular area, fat cells that originally had a smaller fat content, may increase in size. Ideally, maintaining a balanced diet and exercise is the most effective way to take full advantage of your fat dissolving treatment.

How long does the treatment take to do?

Prior to your treatment we will ask you to fill in a medical form that will enable us to have the lidocaine prescribed for the procedure which will only take up approximately 10 minutes of your time.

On the day of your treatment, it will take approximately 30-40 minutes to go through the full consultation, photo taking and consent procedure, and then 10-15 minutes to carry out the procedure itself.

What is the downtime like?

The downtime can be as little as a few minutes, to a couple of weeks but will depend on a variety of factors.

Some patients will experience redness and a tingle, almost itching sensation across the area treated but this most often subsides within a couple of hours, but can be controlled with the use of antihistamines if necessary. Bruising is also something that will need to be considered before booking your treatment to ensure that the any bruising won’t be inconveniently exposed.

Some patients also experience hypersensitivity over the area that has been treated, and can be controlled by wearing something tight over the area to stop clothing from gently rubbing and irritating the area.

Finally, some patients experience an achey feeling over the area treated and this can last a couple of weeks whilst the body is healing.

What can go wrong with fat dissolving?

Apart from the standard bruising and bleeding risks associated with needle use, skin necrosis is a potential risk if the Aqualyx® solution isn’t injected deep enough into the skin. This is a very small risk but can lead to the potential for infections and scarring to occur.

What are the alternatives to fat dissolving treatments?

Whilst diet and exercise as the standard alternatives to fat dissolving treatments, the surgical route of liposuction is also a potential alternative. The downtime however for liposuction can be significant and can result in a lot of discomfort and bruising and many patients opt to try fat dissolving injections prior to considering liposuction.

Will I loose weight or inches with fat dissolving injections?

Aqualyx® fat dissolving treatment should not be considered an option for weight loss, but like liposuction, a body contouring treatment which helps target specific fat cells that are stubborn and are not shifting with diet and exercise. We strongly suggest not to measure the development of your treatment using a tape measure or weighing scales, but instead use photos and the grab test to keep track of your progress.
