More on Collagen Induction Therapy

How does it work?

Collagen Induction Therapy (also known as Microneedling) causes micro punctures in the skin. The skin reacts to this by going into repair mode, tightening up the skin by stimulating the fibroblasts under the surface which increases the amount of collagen and elastin produced. Over time (approximately 12 months), the collagen that was laid down during the initial repair, is replaced by a stronger, longer lasting version of collagen. This means that sometimes, the final result of your treatment won't be seen until 6-12 months after your last treatment.

Due to the fact the treatment works on the lower layers of skin, and every month the top layer is shed, we always suggest having a minimum course of three treatments to get the full effects of the treatment. This is especially important in cases where pigmentation and scarring are the reason for treatment.

How is it carried out?

Initially, we will discuss with you what you are currently using on your skin and advise accordingly to ensure you go away with enough information to maximise your home routine.

We will then start with a double cleanse and tone, followed by dermaplaning (a manual exfoliation of the dead skin). We then use a pen type device which has 12 very small, thin needles on it to penetrate the skin at a shallow depth to cause the micro-injuries.

We will finish your treatment with a moisturiser and SPF suited to your skin type.

How quick does it work?

For the first few days you'll have a beautiful glow and plump skin. For those wanting the treatment for scarring, you may find it has (temporarily) reduced significantly. After a few days, the skin will calm down and you may not notice much of a difference (although some people do at this point, depending on what they are wanting the treatment for).

The most important thing to remember is that Microneedling isn't a one time treatment but one that needs several treatments to truly see the effects. This is especially important when considering this treatment for scarring, plumping the skin, fine lines and wrinkles and pigmentation. We always take pictures so you can see the progress from the first appointment, to a month after the third.

Are there side effects or risks?

Rarely there may be some bruising. This occurs if we "stamp" an area, such in cases of scar or line treatments. This usually clears up after a few days.

You will get some redness for a few days but it often appears as a glow- you can however wear make up from the next day if you do not like the affects.

Due to the trauma to the skin, some people experience peeling- it is very important not to pick this as it can cause pigmentation.

If an infection occurs (rare, but like with any penetration of the skin, there is always a risk) this could potentially lead to scarring. Those who suffer from keloid or hypertrophic scarring are usually advised against this treatment for this reason.

Does it hurt?

We always numb the area for a good 15 minutes beforehand if treatment is on the face. This makes it comfortable for you, which means we can really hit the areas hard that bother you. Occasionally, if we have missed an area on the skin, you may feel a vibration sensation and a slight sting, but it is barrable. We don't usually numb the body but we are happy to do this if requested.

Is it safe for me to have?

Although Skin Peels are safe, they are not suitable for everyone including:

  • Those taking oral retinoids
  • Those who suffer from keloids or hypertrophic scarring
  • Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Those who suffer from cold sores

How can I prepare for my treatment?

Firstly, ask questions and make sure you are 100% happy!

Ladies- avoid your time of the month!

Don't wear make up to your appointment if you can avoid it.

Do not drink alcohol for a couple of days before your treatment and don’t plan on going swimming or doing anything where water or chemicals might touch the treated area.

Look at our contact us page to find out about where all our local car parks are.

Are there any restrictions after?

Don't rub the area

Avoid any treatments in the area a couple of weeks either side.

Avoid alcohol, smoking and anti-inflammatories for a few days afterwards.

Avoid swimming, steam rooms and saunas and going to the gym for a few days.

Do not have a shower or bath for a couple of days.

Avoid any activity that may make you hot, this can encourage the skin to burn well after treatment.
