How does it work?
Chemical face peels are a chemical exfoliator. This means that they help to break down the bonds between skin cells, causing them to shed and exposure fresh new skin underneath.
How is it carried out?
Initially, we will discuss with you what you are currently using on your skin and advise accordingly to ensure you go away with enough information to maximise your home routine.
Depending on the peel and your skin type, we will start with a double cleanse and tone. We will then follow this with dermaplaning (a manual exfoliation of the dead skin) followed by layering the peels (and sometime removing them), as well as adding masks and exfoliators where necessary.
We will finish your treatment with a moisturiser and SPF suited to your skin type.
How quick does it work?
Sometimes you'll notice the difference within a few days, occasionally you will need a course of three peels to really notice the difference, however this will depend on what it is you want to achieve, what it is that's being treated and finally, what you are doing at home to compliment the treatment.
Are there side effects or risks?
The biggest side effect is redness of the skin. Depending on your skin type and the type of peel used, this will be mild and from the next day, you may wear make up to cover this up.
Other risks can include pigmentation and reocurrence of cold sores and we suggest moisturising and use a good SPF for at least two weeks post treatment.
Does it hurt?
It can feel a little tight and burny during the treatment and a little uncomfortable for a few days after treatment, but this will depending on the peel and your skin type. We always suggest lathering up the skin with as much moisturiser as you can get away with to help make this as comfortable as possible.
Is it safe for me to have?
Although Skin Peels are safe, they are not suitable for everyone including:
Those taking oral retinoids
Those who suffer from keloids or hypertrophic scarring
Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding
Those who suffer from cold sores
If you have darker skin, you may be required to have two weeks of preparation at home before you can have a professional peel.
